1. Students participating in third-party projects

Diploma, bachelor or master students are not employed by the ETH Zurich, and the intellectual property rights (IP rights; e.g. know-how, inventions, software) they generate are owned by the students themselves (as opposed to belonging to the ETH Zurich, as is the case with ETH Zurich employees). However, whenever these students generate these IP rights with the help and/or guidance of their tutors or other ETH employees, the IP rights may be jointly owned by the students and ETH Zurich.

Students may participate in projects which ETH Zurich has entered into with a third party and where ETH Zurich has obligations towards the third party (e.g. licenses to any IP rights developed). So that ETH Zurich can fulfill its obligations to the third party, it must have all the rights to do so, and thus the students working on such projects must transfer their rights to the IP to the ETH Zurich. It is the duty of the responsible professor to make sure that all necessary agreements are concluded on time and in writing. Please direct any questions to the responsible person at ETH transfer.
