Nick is chemist by training and obtained his PhD at ETH Zurich in 1974. After a postdoctoral year devoted to photochemistry in the US he joined former Ciba-Geigy in 1975 as a research chemist. His industrial career led him to managerial positions, such as Head of R&D of Electronic Materials in 1982 and as Marketing Head of Digital Printing Materials in 1998. From 2000 until his retirement end 2006 he acted as Senior Technology Officer. He has also been lecturing particularly on subjects like Materials for Electronics at ETH Zurich since 1989.

After his retirement he joined ETH's Materials Research Center (MRC) and the Micro and Nano Science Platform (MNSP) as Industrial Liaison Officer. Nick was president of the Swiss Association for Materials Research and Technology (SVMT) from 2006 until 2011. Since September 2008 he is Senior Industrial Relations Officer at ETH transfer.

In 2006 he became an honorary councilor (Ehrenrat) of ETH Zurich.
