Bayer Climate Award

The Group-wide climate protection initiative launched in 2007 is aimed at driving new solutions for climate protection and addressing climate change. The Bayer Climate Award carries a sum of EUR 50,000 and is presented at two-year intervals from 2008. The award honors fundamental research in scientific and technical disciplines that contributes to explaining and limiting climate change, as well as coping with its effects, through pioneering solutions.

BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge and Culture Awards

The BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge and Culture Awards, whose third edition is now open, seek to recognize and encourage world-class research and artistic creation, prizing contributions of broad impact for their originality and theoretical significance. The name of the scheme is intended to encapsulate both research work that successfully enlarges the scope of our current knowledge – pushing forward the frontiers of the known world – and the meeting and overlap of different disciplinary areas.

The Frontiers Awards honor fundamental disciplinary or supradisciplinary advances in a series of basic, natural, social and technological sciences, as listed in the following paragraph. They also recognize creative activity of excellence in the classical music of our time. Finally, categories are reserved for two core concerns of early 21st century society, climate change and socioeconomic development cooperation, with awards going alternatively to outstanding research work or projects of a diverse nature that mark a significant advance in addressing these global challenges.

Deutscher Studienpreis
Der Wettbewerb richtet sich in Zukunft an diejenigen Nachwuchswissenschaftler und Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen, die mit einer Dissertation ihre erste echte Forschungsarbeit vorgelegt haben. Teilnehmen können alle, die ihr Promotionsverfahren im Kalenderjahr der Ausschreibung mit magna oder summa cum laude abgeschlossen haben. Sie sind aufgefordert, in einem etwa 15 Seiten langen Wettbewerbsbeitrag die zentralen Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungsarbeit zu erläutern und deutlich zu machen, worin deren besondere gesellschaftliche Relevanz besteht. Gemeinsam mit diesem Text sind ein Exemplar der Dissertation sowie die Fachgutachten einzureichen.

GI-Dissertationspreis
Die Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V. (GI) vergibt gemeinsam mit der Schweizer Informatik Gesellschaft, der Österreichischen Computergesellschaft und dem German Chapter of ACM jährlich einen Preis für eine hervorragende Dissertation (GI-Dissertationspreis). Die Dissertation muss in der Informatik angesiedelt sein. Hierzu zählen nicht nur Arbeiten, die einen Fortschritt für die Informatik bedeuten, sondern auch Arbeiten aus den Anwendungen der Informatik in anderen Disziplinen und Arbeiten, die die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Informatik und Gesellschaft untersuchen.

Honda Prize

Marcel-Benoist-Preis
Entsprechend dem Willen seines Stifters ehrt der Marcel-Benoist-Preis jedes Jahr seit 1920 einen in der Schweiz etablierten Wissenschaftler, der, so das Testament Marcel Benoists, "die nützlichste wissenschaftliche Erfindung, Entdeckung oder Studie gemacht hat, die insbesondere für das menschliche Leben von Bedeutung ist."
Der älteste Wissenschaftspreis der Schweiz kann eine bemerkenswerte Liste berühmter ehemaliger Preisträger vorweisen und geniesst grosses Ansehen. Ausserdem gilt er als Preis der Schweizerischen Eidgenossenschaft, da seine Verwaltung eng mit der Bundesregierung verbunden ist.
Beinahe die Hälfte der Preisträger kommen aus der Medizin, wobei sowohl die Grundlagendisziplinen (Physiologie, Endokrinologie, Anatomie, Neurobiologie) als auch die klinischen Fächer (Kardiologie, Augenheilkunde, Chirurgie, Innere Medizin) vertreten sind. Die andere Hälfte ging an Naturwissenschaftler aus einem breiten Spektrum von Disziplinen: Mathematik, Physik, Chemie, Geologie, Biologie und Ökologie. Seit 1997 sind auch Kandidaten und Kandidatinnen aus den Human- und Sozialwissenschaften wählbar.

Stiftung Pfizer Forschungspreis

Rare Diseases - New Approaches
Programme Objectives: The initiative aims at developing and implementing innovative technologies or approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of Rare Diseases. The knowledge gained should lead to a better understanding of the genetic, molecular and biochemical processes underlying these diseases and pave the way towards new forms of treatment or diagnostics. A further aim is to improve the transfer of basic research findings into clinical practice. The focus must be on innovation, feasibility and effectiveness, while attaining high scientific and technological standards.

The R. Geigy Foundation's purpose is to support the Swiss Tropical Institute in its mandate to contribute research, teaching/training and services to the improvement of the health of populations at national and international levels, emphasizing those most in need. To mark the 104th birthday of the founder of the Swiss Tropical Institute and of the R. Geigy Foundation, the late Professor Rudolf Geigy (1902-1994), the Foundation will again select one exceptional individual to receive the annual R. Geigy Foundation Award. His or her peers should recognize the recipient as an outstanding achiever on tropical disease sciences or international public health.

Carl-Zeiss-Forschungspreis: Exzellenz in der Optikforschung
Der 1990 erstmals verliehene Carl-Zeiss-Forschungspreis ehrt alle zwei Jahre herausragende Leistungen in der internationalen Optikforschung. Er ist eine der weltweit renommiertesten Auszeichnungen auf dem Gebiet der Optik. Die späteren Nobelpreisträger Eric A. Cornell und Ahmed Zewail gehören bereits zu den Geehrten.
