The ETH Zurich Research Commission (hereafter the Research Commission) is an official body of the ETH Zurich. It is also an official body of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) with well-defined SNSF-related duties.

Members of the Research Commission are appointed by the ETH Zurich Executive Board (Schulleitung) for an initial period of four years. Their terms on the Commission may be extended for an additional period of four years by the ETH Zurich Executive Board. Many fields of ETH research are represented by the twenty or so Research Commission Members. The President of the Research Commission guides the activities of the Commission and briefs the Vice-President for Research about the recommendations of the Research Commission. The Vice-President for Research makes the final decisions on ETH-internal grant applications based on recommendations of the Research Commission and financial considerations. The work of the Research Commission is aided by the Executive Secretary of the Research Commission and the Office of Research.
The Research Commission is divided into three discipline-oriented Subcommissions, each headed by a Subcommission President.
The Executive of the Research Commission, which comprises the President of the Research Commission and the Presidents of the three Subcommissions, chooses the external and internal reviewers for ETH Research Grant applications. The Executive Secretary of the Research Commission, who attends meetings of the Executive of the Research Commission, is responsible for requesting the external reviews.
The Research Commission provides advice on research-related matters to the Vice-President for Research and other members of the ETH Zurich Executive Board.
The Research Commission is also charged with assessing grant and fellowship applications submitted to the Commission or to the Vice-President of Research. Members of the Research Commission may not "promote" their respective disciplines.

The Research Commission is required to provide the SNSF with brief reviews of SNSF grant applications originating from ETH Zurich. These reviews may include comments on the objectives of the proposed research, methods to be employed and significance of the anticipated results. They may also include clarifications on the resources available to the researchers and identify anticipated logistical problems.

The Research Commission evaluates the applications for the early career mobility fellowships of the SNSF. These fellowships are intended to further the research goals of scientists who will receive are have recently received their doctoral degrees from ETH Zurich. For the SNSF fellowships for Advanced postdoc.mobility the Research Commission provides the SNSF with a written review for the scientific skills and merits of the candidate.
